In light of the meteoric ascent of OpenClaw in a matter of weeks, the AI warning indicator in your organization should be flashing: AI agents are at the gates. Whether OpenClaw itself ultimately succeeds or fails is immaterial to the trajectory. OpenClaw was launched by the Austrian programmer Peter Steinberger as a solo project, built in a few concentrated hours at his home in Vienna in November 2025. By January 2026, it had drawn roughly 200,000 programmers. In mid-February 2026, Steinberger joined OpenAI and committed to transitioning OpenClaw to a foundation-governed structure.
