The UK utilities sector faces a massive opportunity to fundamentally transform the way it operates, and technology will be critical to enabling this change. Unprecedented levels of investment are being pumped into modernising the infrastructure that underpins the energy and water industries, and the success of these huge programs will depend on how effectively organisations can harness the large and escalating volumes of data in order to plan, deploy and maintain these new assets at an optimum level. The industry is under big pressure to change, as creaking water pipelines become a source of flooding and pollution, which is being met by record fines from the industry regulators. At the same time, energy companies are looking to build a more dynamic network that will support increased demand from data centres and the electrification of road vehicles. Software and IT services vendors will have a critical role to play in helping strategy leaders to gain maximum value from advances in areas such as artificial intelligence to help them on the next stage of their transformation journeys.
