AI disrupts industrial engineering and triggers CONTACT Software’s expansion strategy

Industrial engineering and the entire product lifecycle are undergoing an AI-centric digital transformation. Now is the time for IT providers to step up and expand their positioning to become leading vendors in the new age of AI-driven industrial engineering.

In this blog post, we will have a look at CONTACT Software’s current activities to take its PLM platform into the AI age, expand its overall market position, and unlock new growth areas while acknowledging the associated challenges.

Strategic context: AI is pushing the digital transformation of industrial engineering and next-generation PLM

In the coming years, industrial engineering will change dramatically. Digitalization and AI will significantly transform the discipline, increasing speed and productivity. “China speed” is the new mantra in the manufacturing industry to stay competitive. Companies that are unable to adapt to the new pace of innovation will fall behind. Incumbent PLM providers like CONTACT Software are keen to support their clients and move toward next-generation PLM solutions.

Provider strategy: CONTACT Software is on a multidimensional expansion journey

Alongside 650 industry professionals, PAC attended Open World 2026, CONTACT Software’s annual customer and ecosystem event, held in Bonn, Germany, in September 2026, to understand the role of CONTACT Software in the transformation of industrial engineering and PLM. The PLM platform provider has embarked on a multidimensional expansion path to support clients more holistically. This covers the following dimensions:

  • New platform capabilities – CONTACT Software added Fourier AI, an intelligence layer, to its core platform, CONTACT Elements (CONTACT Software launches Fourier AI for the next generation of AI-driven industry). Thanks to its central data store, Fourier AI can contextualize product-related data and combine it with various AI models. This data-centric approach to AI is model-independent and supports applications for an increasing number of use cases. It started with LLMs for similarity search, requirements management, and documentation and is currently expanding into the world of 3D models (e.g., geometric capabilities for 3D similarity search). For more details on the competitive position of Fourier AI, please refer to our latest PAC INNOVATION RADAR 2026 on GenAI-advanced industrial engineering (Digital Platforms for GenAI-Advanced Industrial Engineering in Europe – PAC RADAR 2026)
  • Broader application portfolio – In recent years, CONTACT Software has used IoT as a vehicle to expand its scope from product data management to factory operations and maintenance services. Based on this, the company offers growing capabilities in MES/MOM and field service management. The aim is to support the entire product lifecycle. While other PLM vendors often try to do this through acquisitions (PTC – Vendor Profile – Worldwide), CONTACT Software focuses on in-house development and a tightly integrated system.
  • New service capabilities and industries – With the recent investment in a majority stake in team neusta, CONTACT Software has significantly expanded its IT services capabilities (CONTACT acquires majority stake in team neusta SE). team neusta has 850 employees and a broad service portfolio covering consulting, system integration, software development, and managed services. It serves companies in different industries (team neusta – Shaping Your Digital Future | Digital Solutions). This move has enabled CONTACT Software to better support customers in the manufacturing industry with their digital transformation projects. In addition, team neusta’s footprint in other industries allows CONTACT Software to address new customer groups with PLM-related needs, for example in retail.
  • Broader engineering scope – CONTACT Software is extending its engineering scope by strengthening the integration of PLM and ALM to enable hardware and software components to be managed more consistently across the product lifecycle. This is necessary to deal with the growing relevance of software in system development, driven by the trend toward software-defined products.
  • New deployment options – CONTACT Software’s platform is already available via SaaS, based on AWS cloud. As customers ask for more options to ensure sovereignty, CONTACT Software has added STACKIT as a sovereign European deployment option for cloud-based PLM.
  • Regional expansion – In addition to the existing language support for German and English, the CONTACT Elements platform now also supports Chinese and Japanese. This lays the foundations for broader global adoption of the platform.

The challenge ahead for CONTACT Software: Managing the emerging frictions of multidimensional growth

Growth in multiple dimensions simultaneously creates a new level of complexity and often causes friction across organizations; for example:

  • Product development – Coordinating and prioritizing multiple new requirements on the platform and application levels.
  • Migration paths – Enabling easy update paths from older versions and migration paths between different deployment options.
  • Sales channel – Avoiding channel conflicts between team neusta and other ecosystem partners.

PAC’s take: CONTACT Software is expanding to become a digital accelerator for industrial engineering and the entire product lifecycle

CONTACT Software pursues an ambitious expansion strategy at a time when AI, software-defined products, and digital sovereignty are reshaping industrial engineering. The direction is convincing, although execution will depend on CONTACT’s ability to manage the growing complexity. European companies should consider CONTACT Software a relevant provider for sovereign PLM deployment scenarios, especially where European cloud infrastructure is a key requirement. C&SI providers should see them as a CAD-agnostic PLM platform partner with growing relevance in holistic PLM and AI-driven industrial engineering.
