SAP TechEd 2026: SAP lays the foundation for the Autonomous Enterprise
At the global SAP TechEd 2026, held in Berlin at the end of October, SAP reinforced its vision of the Autonomous Enterprise and outlined how it expects AI agents to become an integral part of future business processes.
The central message was clear: SAP is moving beyond isolated AI features and building a broader platform strategy designed to enable organizations to deploy, govern, and scale AI-driven processes across the enterprise. At the same time, SAP has been opening its ecosystem, positioning SAP and non-SAP applications as equal participants in future AI-enabled business environments.
From AI assistant to Autonomous Enterprise
Since SAP Sapphire 2026, the Autonomous Enterprise has emerged as SAP’s strategic vision for the future. The concept centers on AI agents that can autonomously support or execute business processes while operating within corporate policies, governance frameworks, and regulatory requirements.
A key element of this strategy is the evolution of SAP Joule. Originally introduced as an AI assistant, Joule is increasingly becoming a platform for orchestrating and coordinating AI agents across applications and business functions. SAP has emphasized that human oversight, governance, and control will remain essential components as organizations move toward higher levels of automation.
Joule Studio takes center stage
One of the most significant announcements at TechEd was the continued expansion of Joule Studio. SAP is positioning the platform as the central environment for creating, managing, and governing AI agents.
The company takes a low-code approach designed to make agent development accessible to a broader audience while enabling IT teams to retain responsibility for integration, security, and governance. SAP has also introduced additional capabilities aimed at supporting the testing, monitoring, and lifecycle management of AI agents, reflecting the growing importance of enterprise-grade governance.
Opening the Autonomous Enterprise beyond SAP
Another important theme was SAP’s increasing openness to non-SAP applications and data sources. Rather than limiting AI innovation to its own technology stack, SAP is building an architecture that allows external applications, models, and agents to participate in end-to-end business processes.
A key element of this strategy is the SAP Enterprise AI Gateway, which is designed to provide a common layer for managing AI services, agents, and models while supporting security, compliance, and governance requirements. The broader message is that future AI-driven business processes will span heterogeneous enterprise landscapes rather than operate solely within SAP environments.
Adding business context to AI
SAP also highlighted the growing importance of business context for enterprise AI. While access to data is essential, AI agents must also understand business relationships, processes, and rules in order to deliver meaningful outcomes.
To address this challenge, SAP is expanding its Knowledge Graph capabilities and enabling customers to incorporate their own business-specific context. The goal is to provide AI agents with a deeper understanding of how business objects, processes, and organizational structures relate to one another. This could become a key differentiator as enterprises move from generic AI assistants to specialized agents capable of supporting complex business scenarios.
Ambitious vision, different starting points
While the breadth of SAP’s AI strategy is impressive, many customers remain focused on more fundamental priorities. Organizations continue to invest heavily in S/4HANA transformation, process harmonization, and data modernization initiatives, all of which are prerequisites for realizing the full potential of autonomous business processes.
It was therefore notable how strongly TechEd focused on agentic AI and the Autonomous Enterprise vision, while traditional ERP topics played a fairly minor role. SAP’s innovation agenda is clearly oriented toward the next phase of enterprise transformation.
PAC’s comment on SAP TechEd 2026
SAP used SAP TechEd 2026 to demonstrate that its Autonomous Enterprise vision is evolving from concept to platform strategy. The continued expansion of Joule, the growing openness to non-SAP environments, and the focus on governance and business context all point toward a future in which AI agents become a core component of enterprise operations.
The challenge now lies less in the availability of technology and more in customer readiness. Many organizations are still building the data, process, and governance foundations required for autonomous business processes. How quickly they can close this gap will determine the pace with which SAP’s vision becomes reality.
