Utilities - InBrief Analysis - Italy

This InBrief Analysis examines digital transformation in the Italian utilities sector.

Italy’s energy landscape in 2024/25 was shaped by global conflicts and trade tensions, which disrupted gas markets and prompted utilities to improve efficiency and expand renewable energy generation. National energy consumption decreased, primarily due to a decline in coal and oil consumption, while renewable energy sources increased. Utilities and multi-utilities significantly increased investment, supported by the PNRR, to upgrade grids, expand wind and solar capacity, and modernize water and transport infrastructures.

At the same time, companies accelerated their digitalization efforts, adopting AI, IoT, edge computing, cloud solutions, and cybersecurity measures to optimize networks, enhance operational resilience, support customer services, and manage the growing integration of renewable energy sources.
