The slightly paranoid but certainly correct assumption is that successful attacks can occur at any time and at all levels, no matter how sophisticated a security strategy and its implementation and operation may be. Therefore, it is important to do everything possible to protect yourself. On the other hand, you should always expect attackers to be successful and be prepared to stop any attack with minimum delay.
