Alten operates in engineering and R&D services (with its Engineering unit) and IT services (through the IT.ES organization). It has a large service portfolio that includes digital services, product engineering (including connected products), and digital manufacturing (mostly relying on IoT).
In engineering and R&D (ER&D), Alten has a background in embedded software and is primarily present in product engineering services (PAC estimate: ~85% of Engineering revenues); it has a growing presence in OT/digital manufacturing (~15%).
Alten tends to develop capabilities through hiring the right profiles rather than formally managing a service portfolio. This is because Alten Engineering still relies on a mix of local agencies and a technical office that responds to invitations to bid. Local agencies tend to provide staff augmentation services, while the technical office drives bids and negotiates work package contracts. PAC estimates the Engineering split of activities to be 2/3 work packages and 1/3 staff augmentation.
Alten has a significant presence in Europe (€3.3bn in revenues, 60% outside of France). It also has a decent presence in the US (~€0.5bn in revenues). Unlike in Europe, where Alten tends to address only specific sectors with an offshore approach (automotive, telecom network equipment manufacturers), in the US the company has focused on offshore delivery. Alten has growth ambitions in the US and targets 5k engineers locally, supported by India (and, to a lesser extent, China).
Alten recently focused its investments on AI and GenAI across Engineering and IT.ES. The company has two streams: AI for internal support functions and AI for customers (around SDLC productivity and marketing & partnerships). Alten has developed approx. 60 technical accelerators and conducted approx. 300 AI- and GenAI-related projects
