In July 2021, the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) adopted a draft resolution titled “Open Source Technologies for Sustainable Development”. Open source can play a key role in driving sustainability by enabling collaboration, innovation, and transparency in the pursuit of low-carbon solutions. The concept of digital commons is emerging, promising more sustainable and inclusive digital technologies. This Expert View will give an overview of the ways in which open source can drive sustainability, highlight some interesting initiatives, and discuss how IT providers can deploy open source to reach their sustainability goals.
