Microsoft follows Anthropic and OpenAI by launching the Frontier Company, aimed at industrializing the last mile of AI. The stated goal is to build the largest Forward Deployed Engineering (FDE) organization to deliver outcome-driven engineering. With that, Microsoft seeks to differentiate itself from frontier labs focused on inference and intelligence, notably after the exclusive partnership with OpenAI was phased out. The broader strategic question is whether Microsoft is entering the IT services market and what the chances of success are. PAC does not believe that Microsoft is entering consulting, but that the goal is to ensure that AI deployments finally scale and deliver business value. The scale of the new business sets Microsoft apart from similar recent launches by its competitors.
